Monday July 12th 2010 – Mississauga to Elgin Illinois

Miles travelled = 521
Miles travelled since leaving home = 8402

Hmm, my clean and shiny bike lasted all of 70 miles. I ran into a real soaker before London that lasted about an hour. It started to clear as I got close to Sarnia, and by the time I crossed into the US it was dry, with sunny periods. I did get a few sprinkles during the day, but nothing to write home about. Apart from the rain it was great riding weather, in the high 60s and low 70s. However, as I got close to Chicago, it warmed up to the high 80s, with humidity.

The border crossing took about 30-45 minutes, quite a line up across the bridge, but no hassles to get through. The Agent was quite intrigued as to why I had crossed into Canada in Maine seeing as I lived in Seattle. She was even more intrigued when I explained the 4 Corners Tour.

The ride through Michigan on I69 was just that, a ride through Michigan. The scenery is rural, and very flat, and not very interesting. The day was really a “get used to riding again” type of day.

I picked up I94 and crossed into Indiana, then headed for Chicago.

I chose to take the I90 toll and I think that was a good move. It is interesting there is no welcome sign for Illinois, but as you head up the Chicago Skyway bridge, there is a large sign that says “Welcome to Chicago - Mayor Richard Daly”. I guess he is Illinois. I followed the toll route all the way in, and apart from a delay caused by road works, the ride was quick through the city. I90 goes right through the city center, and taking the express toll ($3), you get a marvelous view of downtown, with all the high risers, and the Sears Tower. Unfortunately there was too much traffic to get a photo. It really is an express route, no trucks allowed, with the metro running alongside. Traffic became bogged down once I got through the downtown area, and it was stop-go the last hour or so. I decided to pull off the highway as black clouds appeared, and it seems I might get rain during the night.

So tomorrow I continue on I90, then I94 heading into Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota. My mind should be more in tune with riding after to-day’s warm up.
