2012 Waterdown Ont. – NY – PA – WV –
Front Royal VA 465 miles.
Headed
out from Waterdown just before 7AM, a clear, crisp and cool morning. Autumn is
definitely on the way, and the trees through New York and Pennsylvania were starting
to turn. It was fleece on until early afternoon when it started to warm up. So
a quick ride down the QEW to Buffalo, a slight delay at the border, wheels on
I90W for a couple of miles then south on US219 cutting through New York and
into Pennsylvania. The road is mostly in the Allegheny National Forest and the
mountains, so the scenery was mainly forest. A couple of interesting towns were
enroute, Mount Jewett and Ridgway, but the rest was mainly trees. Into
Pennsylvania one follows the Appalachian Mountains, again mainly trees. There
were a few road works, but traffic was very light so little delay was
experienced.
On into
West Virginia, then Virginia and Front Royal, the gateway to Skyline Drive,
Shenandoah National Park, then onto the Blue Ridge Parkway. I reckon it is a 2
day ride for both, as although the total distance is only about 500 miles, it
has a 45mph limit, and there is plenty to see. I did find the Visitors Center
in Front royal to pick up the freebee guide books, so will use them as I go.
