Miles travelled = 616
Loaded up and fed my steed, and headed out of town before first light. Nothing on the road, all the big rigs were still in bed. One needed to stay alert for shredded tires, but apparently there is little in the way of deer around. I always reckon that the best time of the day is sunrise when on the water. Riding through the desert is close. The air still felt warm, but very comfortable, and as the sun rose it became cooler for a while. Before leaving, I had asked the motel receptionist about where the climate would start to change from hot and dry to more humid. She said about 4 hours out of El Paso, and she was right on the money. You could feel it, and it became hazy in the distance. Still OK though. It stayed like that until about 150 miles from San Antonio, where it became more cloudy, not black ones but white and grey.
About 2 hours out of El Paso was another Border Patrol. This one more like a border point as opposed to a check point. I was actually asked if I was a US citizen, and when I answered ‘no – Canadian’, I was sent on my way. I guess I have an honest face.
I would like to say the scenery was interesting, but cannot. It was at least a shade of green as opposed to brown. However, about 150 miles from San Antonio, after Junction, the road climbs into some hills, and hey presto, another world. Green grass and trees. The scenery into San Antonio was quite attractive.
The speed limit is 80mph (70 for trucks) practically all the way from El Paso to San Antonio. I saw just 2 Highway Patrol cars all day, and they were off the road. If one had a hot machine, 2 or 4 wheels, you could haul it. Surprisingly I don’t remember a seeing anyone gunning it. Drivers were pretty polite, except for between San Antonio and Weiner where they seem to suddenly adopt the Washington syndrome, of driving in the left hand lane come what may. One thing about I10 is that it is generally in great shape. I had one bad stretch where they had repaved the road, and the gravel had worn off for the two tracks in the inside lane, exposing the tar which of course was melting. Outside lane for that stretch.
No photos today, just good riding. Most likely the same for the next couple of days as I need to turn it up a notch to get on schedule. I had no real plans for side roads for a short while anyway.
For those who may be following this trip, I did mange to get some photos into my various days that had been missing them.
