Day 4 - Thursday June 3rd – Marina - Monterey to Costa Mesa

Miles travelled = 361
Sunshine to start the day, which is a great change. This is Big Sur day, so camera at the ready. Leaving Carmel is a good scene setter as although it doesn’t seem to be classified as Big Sur, it sure is scenic. Especially with those zillion $ homes you pass by.

The Big Sur is everything made out to be, but I have to admit as far as a difficulty level to ride, I rate is far less than the northern part from yesterday. It does have some tight twisties, but nothing on the scale of up north, and the actual Sur is about 75 miles. After which it straightens out and becomes a fairly fast ride alongside the beaches to San Luis Obispo. If the north had the sunny climate I think it would be just as glamorous. The Sur has blue seas, and amazing beaches. There are many Kodak moments, and many pull ins are just gravel or dirt. Not good for stopping the bike on. So I took some photos by just stopping, and snapping. I had the camera slung around my neck for the Sur.

A selection of photos of the Big Sur

I think the best way to travel the Sur is by RV (horrors one of those land wagons that cause congestion). That way you can camp and explore, as there are many beaches and places to do just that. Even better would be to have a bike on a trailer. Talking of bikes, I thought I was loaded up, but there are many cyclists touring H1, with loads of bags and gear, twiddling away up the hills.

I can see why California is so popular, it sure is a beautiful state, and varied. From Morro Bay along the coast to Santa Barbara is incredible. The only thing is the fog. It really comes and goes. It was welcome at times to-day as it had a cooling effect.

So after Santa Barbara it was H1 to the 405, San Diego freeway, to Costa Mesa. Rush hour in Los Angeles, but the HOV lane on 405 helped.

The helmet camera captured some great shots of Big Sur riding.

Stayed at the Vagabond Inn.

So tomorrow to Corner 2, San Ysidro, then east for the slog to Florida.
